What is Umbrella Coverage?
Umbrella coverage, often called "excess liability"
coverage, is a must for every home, auto or watercraft
owner. It is not just for the wealthy, as many typically
believe. As many individuals are finding out, you don't
have to be a millionaire to be sued like one. Umbrella
coverage will provide you with added financial protection
in the event that someone is injured while on your
property, or even with you on non-business activities
anywhere in the world. And since umbrella policies are
typically inexpensive, especially when you consider the
added coverage you get, no one should be without an
umbrella policy.
Why do I need umbrella coverage?
You've worked hard for your home and assets. You need to
ensure that those assets will available to you in the
short- and long-term. Homeowners insurance provides a
minimum of $100,000 liability coverage (the coverage that
protects you when people are injured or property is
damaged due to circumstances in which you or your family
is responsible). And although it varies widely by state,
the minimum liability protection for auto insurance in
Massachusetts is around $20,000 per person and $40,000 per
accident. These minimum coverages may not be enough to
protect your assets or your future. Umbrella insurance, or
excess liability coverage, will provide at least a million
dollars of additional protection above your current
homeowners or automobile liability limits. That's the
protection you need to safeguard your children's college
education or your retirement goals.
Your local independent agent or Travelers of Massachusetts
representative can help you determine the coverage amount
that works best for you.
